AI for retail and ecommerce.

AI and custom software for Australian retailers and ecommerce operators. Customer service triage, returns handling, stock allocation across channels, supplier invoice coding, promotion margin analysis, and reconciling the channels that never quite agree with each other.

What we automate

We build systems that integrate with the operational reality of Australian businesses in this sector. Common workflows we automate end to end:

  • Customer enquiry triage and drafted responses grounded in your policies
  • Returns and warranty handling against the consumer guarantee position
  • Stock allocation across stores, warehouse and online channels
  • Supplier invoice coding to category, season and account
  • Promotion and markdown margin analysis, during rather than after
  • Multi-channel sales and settlement reconciliation
  • Review and user content triage with escalation of real problems

The realities we build around

Customer contact volume is spiky and mostly repetitive, and the exceptions are what actually need a person.

Returns are a consumer law question before they are a logistics question, and getting the position wrong is a regulatory risk.

Stock in the wrong channel is the same cost as no stock, and the allocation decision is made daily.

Every channel reports differently, so the true margin picture is assembled by hand or not at all.

Why work with us

Retail work built around the two things that decide an Australian retailer’s year: whether stock is in the right channel, and whether the customer contact load is absorbed without adding heads. Both are tractable. Neither is solved by a generic chatbot.

Where most AI in this sector goes wrong

Most AI sold into retail is a support chatbot measured on deflection rate, which optimises for the customer giving up. The fragmented patterns: response drafting that does not know your actual returns policy or your consumer law position, so it promises things you cannot honour; recommendation engines bolted on without touching allocation or buying; "AI for reviews" that generates replies while the underlying product problem is never routed to anyone; promotion analysis that arrives after the promotion; and channel reconciliation left as a monthly spreadsheet exercise. Deflection is not the metric. Resolution without a person, on the enquiries that genuinely do not need one, is.

Systems we integrate against

Retail engagements integrate against whatever you run: your point of sale and online store, your inventory system, your customer messaging platform, your support desk, and your accounting system. We do not publish a supported-vendor list: line of business applications, online software, on premise or in the cloud, current or long abandoned by its vendor. If it holds the data, we integrate with it, and if it is not named here that is not a limitation. Most AU retailers run one online platform, one point of sale, and a settlement process that reconciles late. Integration is the value: a support agent that can actually see the order, the stock and the shipment resolves an enquiry, and one that cannot just apologises.

If your stack isn’t listed above, reach out anyway. The systems vary by industry but the integration patterns don’t. We can usually work with whatever you’re running. Tell us your stack.

Regulatory and compliance landscape

Australian retail operates under the Australian Consumer Law, where the consumer guarantee regime sits above any store policy and misrepresenting a customer’s rights is itself a breach, alongside product safety and mandatory recall obligations. The Privacy Act governs customer data with the Australian Privacy Principles, and the Spam Act governs marketing consent and unsubscribe handling. Payment card data is covered by PCI DSS obligations through your provider. Gift card expiry is regulated federally. We build customer-facing automation so it states the consumer guarantee position correctly rather than the store policy where the two differ, because that distinction is where retailers get penalised.

Operational outcomes we move

Defensible outcomes on retail engagements: repetitive customer enquiries resolved without a person while genuine exceptions reach one faster; returns handled consistently and on the correct legal footing; stock allocated across channels on demand signal rather than habit; supplier invoices coded without a back-office day each week; promotion margin visible during the promotion; and channel settlements reconciled continuously rather than at month end.

Common deployment patterns

Common deployment patterns for AU retailers: a support agent grounded in your policies, your order data and your actual consumer law position, escalating anything it cannot resolve; a returns workflow that applies the guarantee test consistently; an allocation assistant that moves stock to where demand actually is; supplier invoice coding to category and season; and a live promotion margin view.

Related Bedstone services

Retailers typically pair this with AI accounts for supplier invoice coding and reconciliation, customer service agents, and our wholesale work where you also supply trade. Or look at Bedstone OS for one workspace across orders, stock, suppliers and customer history.

How we engage

Five-step delivery, scoped to fit. Audit, scope sprint, proof of concept, verification, rollout. Wrapped as a fixed-scope sprint, monthly retainer, fractional engagement, or one-off audit. See services for the full process and commercial structures.

Common questions

Will it answer customers without a person?

On the enquiries that genuinely do not need one, yes, and only where it can see the order, the stock and the shipment. Anything it cannot resolve goes to a person with the context already assembled. We do not optimise for deflection, because deflection just means the customer gave up.

How do you handle refunds and the consumer guarantee?

The system applies the consumer guarantee position, not just the store policy, because where the two differ the guarantee wins and misstating it is itself a breach. Where the case is genuinely arguable it goes to a person rather than committing you.

Can it work across our store and online channels?

Yes, and that is usually the point. Most of the value is in seeing stock, orders and customers across every channel at once, which is exactly what the separate systems prevent today.

We are a small team. Is this too much?

A scoped first version through an Automate Your Role engagement from $12,000 takes one repetitive function off one person. That is a normal starting point for a small retail team and it does not require replacing anything.
